The tunnel seemed like a lost cause. It was dark, except for the creeping light of the fire that was inching it's way closer to where they stood, and there were no more openings in which they could run in in attempt to escape the flames. Isis could feel Elizabeth's silent panic-stricken look fall on her. Her new camaraderie probably thought she was insane and led them to their almost certain death, but Isis could not help but let out the mental breath she knew she had been holding in since they began running, feeling virtually at ease.
She looked up to her right where she saw the metal crafted ladder. Surely rusted due to it's many years of grimy incasement, it would still be sturdy enough to get them to the open land that laid only a few yards above them.
Isis heard the amusement in Elizabeth's voice as she saw what Isis had seen only seconds before her. She walked closer to her as she jumped and managed to pull the ladder down. It rattled some, but came to a sturdy stop. While Elizabeth began making her way towards the top, Isis wasted no time and quickly followed beginning to feel the heat of the nearing blaze. Step by step she continued on her path towards the top not missing a single step since she did not want to risk slipping and falling down onto the firm stone ground.

Once they reached the surface Elizabeth fell to her knees to catch her breath. “Only I could do something like that,” she muttered grimly in between her huffs. “I mean I know I’m a klutz, but that? That was just…that was ridiculous! I seriously hope I didn’t hurt anyone down there.” While she was pretty sure the fire would die down shortly, after all it was quite a big fire and some commotion would probably stir from it, she was still afraid that it might cause a casualty or two for some unsuspecting people taking an unfortunate wrong turn. But there wasn’t anything she could do for those people.
“I’m sorry,” she apologized, shifting her knees out from underneath her so she sat cross-legged and bent over slightly, holding onto her feet. “I think I just ruined your plans where ever you were going,” she winced. “But, if it’s any consolation, I really don’t know if I can thank you enough for helping me get out of there. Thanks, Isis.”

Isis took in fresh breaths of air. They felt cleansing as they went down her throat and into her lungs; almost as if taking a gulp of ice cold water during the middle of a drought. Her eyes did not have the burning sensation they carried while they ran through the tunnels anymore. Although the fire stayed a good distance of a few yards behind them, that did not stop the smoke from piling up and threatening their very source of oxygen.
She was simply glad they had made it out.
Looking down at the red head as she spoke to her, Isis felt her face lighten up some. "No need to be sorry, really. I was just doing a round for my mom," she said as she gently held up the messenger bag that laid on her shoulder and swooped across her chest, finally resting on her hip. "I could always do it tomorrow. Plus, it was a good memory game on my part." She was possibly more happy than what she ought to be, given the circumstances they had just undergone, but never the less, she was all too excited. She chuckled at the thought some as she tightened the hair tie that kept her hair up in a messy ponytail.
After taking a few more swigs of the fresh air, she turned to look at the swaying trees and went on to ask, "So what now?"
